NTT Communications Embarks on Product Appraisal of Nuage Networks’ Next Generation SDN Solutions

Mountain View, California/Tokyo, April 16 2014

Alcatel-Lucent (CEO: Michel Combes) announced today that NTT Communications Corporation (Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, President & CEO: Akira ARIMA, hereafter called “NTT Com”) is to embark on product appraisal of Virtualized Services Platform (VSP) of Nuage Networks (Head Office: Mountain View, California, U.S., CEO: Sunil KHANDEKAR, hereafter called “Nuage”), a new venture founded by Alcatel-Lucent in Silicon Valley and dedicated to the development of Software Defined Networking (SDN) solutions, in order to address such customer needs as seamless networking between cloud services and Wide Area Network services.

As a current and worldwide provider of cloud services that leverage SDN technology, NTT Com may, during the appraisal of Nuage VSP and as a result of this PoC, consider offering scalable and programmable virtual network services that interwork with high-quality VPN services, as well as strengthening highly-functional, value-added services such as fully-automated service chaining.

Nuage Networks VSP is a network virtualization solution of an overlay model with the following main features:

  1. Cloud-seamless networking over multiple sites:
Flexible networking is supported not only within a DC but also between cloud network and external networks such as MPLS-VPN (L2/L3) or on-premise environment.
  2. Robust mpBGP-based control plane:
mpBGP with good track records of working at telecom carriers worldwide is leveraged for virtual network control plane.  Thanks to this, current BGP-like hierarchical management or policy implementation can remain intact, while large-scale networks can be supported and easy scale-out during location expansion is possible.
  3. Programmability, rich API set, Hadoop statistics and analytics engine:
With a dedicated policy engine that’s been fostered in the mobile domain, highly abstracted network operation is possible.
  4. A dedicated hardware gateway in the lineup:
With 7850VSG that provides hardware-processing, QoS or bandwidth control on a tenant basis is achieved with high resolution.
  5. Convergence of existing physical resources and virtual resources:
L2/L3 virtual networking with non-virtualized physical server or standalone appliance/device can be offered.
  6. Multi-hypervisor, multi-cloud platform support:
Flexible configuration is possible without getting locked into specific hypervisor or cloud management platform.
Supported HV: KVM, Xen, vSphere ESXi, Hyper-V (Support within 2014 planned)
Supported CMS: Openstack, CloudStack, VMware vCloud,  CloudBand™
  7. Protocol stack of Alcatel-Lucent’s carrier-grade router OS employed:
SROS (※1), which has track records of working stably at telecom carriers in more than 110 countries worldwide, is employed for SDN controller protocol stack (OSPF, IS-IS, mpBGP).

※1: SROS: Multi-task and modular OS designed for carrier-grade routers of Alcatel-Lucent 7×50 series

NTT Com is in collaboration with Alcatel-Lucent, the parent company of Nuage, in the Proof of Concept (PoC) activities at “Corporation Aggregate Okinawa Open Laboratory” (NTT Com being a full member thereof) for the purpose of industrialization/mass adoption of SDN and cloud technologies.  Preparations are under way to perform PoC including auto scale-in / scale-out of applications and inter-continental disaster recovery with a dedicated orchestrator, by interconnecting with Alcatel-Lucent’s cloud research facilities in U.S.

Quotes:

Mr. Yukio ITO, Director, Member of the Board and Senior VP of Service Infrastructure, NTT Com:

“We’ve been engaged in PoC for Nuage Networks VSP since when its initial version was released in 2013, and realize that the product has great potential as a virtual network solution of an overlay model.  We have high hopes for the upcoming product appraisal of the new version of VSP, as it could further strengthen the global cloud vision that we advocate, enabling us to consider offering new cloud services that bring benefit to customers.”

Mr. Sunil KHANDEKAR, CEO of Nuage Networks:

“Nuage Networks VSP is focused on eliminating the networking constraints that hinder effective cloud resource utilization while combining carrier-grade scale and performance. Thanks to this, it’s been receiving high accolades from cloud/telecom service providers worldwide. With a rich set of API, it can work in concert with cloud networking platform. Moreover, since it’s been developed using a methodology that’s highly compatible with VPN networks including Universal One, we are convinced that it should be able to contribute to further strengthening the cloud-seamless / layer-seamless strategy as advocated by NTT Com.”
