Nuage Networks solves critical operational challenge to accelerate adoption of SDN-powered enterprise cloud and wide area network (WAN) services

Virtualized Services Assurance Platform (VSAP) is industry’s first solution to deliver operational visibility and multi-vendor management between SDN overlays and any network fabric underlay.

New York, New York – May 13, 2015 – Nuage Networks, the Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) venture focused on delivering innovative software defined networking (SDN) solutions, removes yet another key constraint that stands in the way of broad adoption of open cloud networking.

Announced today in conjunction with the Open Networking User’s Group (ONUG) Spring 2015 conference at Columbia University, New York, the Nuage Networks Virtualized Services Assurance Platform (VSAP) addresses the need for visibility and correlation between the virtual networks for applications and workloads (the “overlay”) and the physical connectivity provided by the datacenter network infrastructure (“the underlay”).

Until now, SDN-based cloud deployments have been forced to compromise on openness in order to achieve full network operational visibility. With rapid advances in adoption of virtual networking in support of open private and hybrid clouds over the past year, and with the associated growth and expansion of networks, the time has come to address the operational requirements for coordinating overlay connectivity and network services with the open array of underlay choices that are being deployed. Until now, gaps in visibility have hindered fault isolation and compromised timely resolution.

The Nuage Networks VSAP addresses the correlation between policy-based overlay networks while preserving an enterprise’s freedom of choice in the underlying network hardware. It provides timely visibility for fault isolation, service management, and inventory management. To do so, the VSAP uses open protocols to discover and maintain topologies, and aggregates virtual and physical topologies to correlate services, analyze faults and facilitate remediation actions.

Unlike other approaches that are tied to specific hardware, the underlying intra and inter-datacenter infrastructure can consist of any networking equipment that supports standard protocols (e.g. OSPF, BGP, ISIS, SNMP). This provides enterprises building or expanding their open cloud the freedom of choice across all key elements of their infrastructure while delivering the service assurance and visibility that is critical to the operation of their cloud-based network services and the timely and secure delivery of applications to their workgroups.

“Enterprises building and expanding their clouds are increasingly calling for better visibility and correlation between network overlays and the physical systems that underlay them.  Without this tight coupling between overlay and underlay, the ultimate benefits that SDN can bring won’t be attainable. It is good to see Nuage Networks extend the thinking around this important area.” said Ben Kepes technology analyst and commentator.

The VSAP successfully completed the first testing program to validate market solutions against key IT requirements from the Open Networking User Group (ONUG) Conference at Columbia University. The ONUG use case validation testing is a landmark event in the networking industry, signalling the first time commercial solutions are being tested against requirements outlined by the ONUG Working Groups. This extensive, 3-month long testing process was conducted by Ixia in conjunction with ONUG. Nuage Networks presented its findings today in a Tech Field Day Extra at ONUG.

“We were delighted to have Nuage Networks on board with ONUG testing this spring. These tests underscore our commitment to the ONUG Community of IT executives and vendors to validate product features that meet IT business leader requirements for enterprise cloud infrastructure,” said Nick Lippis, Chairman and Co-Founder of ONUG. “We are confident that this testing effort with partners such as Nuage Networks will assist in moving the open infrastructure industry from technology curiosity to operations.”

“Now that private cloud deployments by notable enterprises have become commonplace and have been extended beyond test and development environments, operational requirements for clear multivendor visibility are paramount and timely. Nuage Networks is highlighting and addressing this next key obstacle to the broad adoption of open enterprise clouds with a Virtualized Services Assurance Platform, which correlates virtual network overlays and the physical underlay for timely fault isolation and remediation.” Ray Mota, CEO, ACG

Sunil Khandekar, CEO of Nuage Networks added, “During the last two years Nuage Networks has been systematically working to remove any networking constraints limiting enterprises from fully embracing the power of SDN technology. With the announcement of our ONUG test results and our new VSAP offer, we are providing a new clear view of the networking operations that will allow high-performance customers to react and respond in a virtualized environment the same way they would in traditional architecture.”

The Nuage Networks VSAP is a new modular element that can be incorporated into the Virtualized Services Platform (VSP), which has been deployed by dozens of enterprises and cloud providers in the past year. Nuage Networks VSAP is commercially available and in trials now.
